An Early Bird or a Night Owl?

I’m rather a Night Owl. In the evenings and at nights, I seem to have more energy and it feels like I work better. Getting up early gives the advantage of having a longer day, but when I have some free time eg. at the weekend, nothing can force me to go to bed early.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Probably the fact that I am an observer. While learning new things or meeting new people I usually behave calmly and modestly. I like to study and draw examples from observed things. Only after some time I become a more vivid person.

What was the last thing that have surprised you?

A sudden strike back of winter - thought that spring is already coming! But seriously, it’s difficult to tell. I used to watch “ New traces of Pythagoras” by Bogdan Miś and I was pretty much surprised how can you explain a lot of complicated things in so nice and simple way.

Most used gadget?

Definitely my laptop. I don’t have too many gadgets. My phone is simple enough to use it only for essential purposes, but I plan to change it. When I have some free time and I’m left alone, I instinctively switch on my laptop and check out what’s happening in the world and what’s new in the ROR ecosystem. I always plug in hoping that I will find something inspiring.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

I’m a bit lazy so I often say “I don’t feel like doing something”. But I use the phrase in two ways. The traditional one - where I value my free time and consider what is more valuable to me: the benefit of doing something or sitting back, like: “I don’t feel like washing the dishes, I’ll wait until there is some more.” On the other hand, I use is as a motivational statement to predict future benefits eg. ” I don’t want to get fat so I better go jogging now”.

What is your most treasured possession?

I don’t really get attached to things - I actually like the idea of ” 100 Thing Challenge”. The most valuable things that I would never give away are souvenirs from various events that stuck in my memory. I mean all those little things that I mostly connect with cool and spontaneous events and that remind me some interesting histories. A sort of memories’ box.

Who is your technological guru?

It’s hard to pick up specific individuals. In the ROR community and generally in the IT environment, there are a lot of people who I admire and try to follow their footsteps. Each of those individuals inspires me in a different way. If I had to list a few of them, I’d say: Gary Bernhardt, Andy Osmani and Ilya Grigorik.

A bike or a beer?

Well, it depends on the season. For ¾ of the year I definitely go for sport like jogging, football (biking less often). But in the winter when I have no desire to leave my flat, I prefer sipping a good beer instead.

What have you found truly inspiring lately?

The last thing that inspired me to take an action was the speech by Jack Walkiewicz on motivation. I agree with many of his opinions, and even I’ve the previously figured out their accuracy. Especially part on taking risk in life instead of the quest for a quiet and peaceful “life experience”. I have the presentation in my mind all the time and I hope I’ll manage to follow those tips in real life.

Developing or building up from scratches?

Well, it depends;) ;) ;) I had the opportunity to complain about already existing solutions in various projects, but on the other hand I wouldn’t like to reinvent something that has already been created. If I had to choose whether to develop or start something from scratch, I would trust myself and prefer building from the ground up.

Most used app?

Definitely Google Chrome - can you even live without a web browser? News, e-mails, science, entertainment - if I have to deal with it online, it’s always through the browser. The second place goes to Skype,- not only at work - I managed to convince some friends that Skype actually is useful communicator. I also like Command Line and Sublime Text;)

Which website do you visit everyday?

There are several url’s I visit daily. The first two are google reader and facebook. I like to be on track with all the IT news, see what’s going on with my friends, play in SongPop. When I have more time I visit twitter, wykop.pl, check my mailbox. Rest of the time I spend on the Web, mostly derives from the above-mentioned services (reference links, etc).
