Weekend Retreat Hacked: the Hackathon!

You think team retreats are all about lazy hanging around and embarrassing event activities? Not in our case! We kick off our weekends together with an all-day hackathon. Check out the apps that were born during the last Netguru hackathon!

You think team retreats are all about lazy hanging around and embarrassing event activities? Not in our case! We kick off our weekends together with an all-day hackathon. Why? It’s an exciting challenge, a chance to meet new people from offices around Poland and collaborate on projects we’ve been thinking about, but had no time to get started or finish. Check out the apps that were born during the last Netguru hackathon!

Today I Learned aka TIL

The idea behind this app is to share interesting facts about technologies we use. It gathers recent hacks and solutions to problems discovered by the team and combines it into neat weekly updates so that you can learn from fellow developers. That's just one way of implementing knowledge exchange at Netguru.

NG Raise App

Real apps for solving real problems: a crucial issue for every Netguru employee is their pay rise. When? How much? The Hackathon-winning app was an unusual solution to this problem. Bartek created an arcade game featuring the Netguru CEO and co-founder to help employees determine their pay rise!

NG News

Since our team is growing constantly, the app creators decided to deliver a tool that helps us stay up to date with the latest changes in the company. By using it, you can exchange info regarding promotions, events, projects, new job offers or blog posts - anything other team members should know. Also, you can filter the news and search only the updates that are most interesting to you. Do you like this idea? Jump into the NG News GitHub repo and contribute!

Tune Blaster

Now something more entertaining, for any music lover with an Android phone. This game is a pop music quiz you can play with your friends, similar to Song Pop or Rock On. All you need is your smartphone and a computer or TV, for the player interface. While the tune is playing, the goal is to recognize it as fast as you can and choose the correct title from the 4 that appear on your mobile. The music database uses Rhapsody API as the source of songs. Great as a warm-up before our already-traditional karaoke sessions during integration parties - it can help you choose the songs you’re going to sing later :).

Food Truck Locator

Yet another problem-solving app, created by our team from the Tricity (Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot) where our folks frequently feed on food truck fare. If you can’t see what food trucks are serving close to your office on a particular day, you can use the app to receive daily updates on the locations and select the one you like most. Bon appetit!

Review Chrome Extension

This app, written in Ember, makes it easier to manage the code reviews our devs participate in (our whole dev team is obliged to review the code written by other devs). In a simple and easy-to-read interface, you can see the items that are still being reviewed, finished, approved, passed or rejected without unnecessary digging in the management tools. Pretty handy! Check out Review Chrome Extension on GitHub. As you can see, this app was the runner-up of our Hackathon contest.

Samuel Ipsum

If you’re bored with the standard “lorem ipsum” text in the app mockups, why not replace it by something more exciting - movie quotes? That’s exactly what Samuel Ipsum does. You can adjust the parameters you need for your project (the number of paragraphs, headers, etc.) and pick the movie of your choice. Samuel Ipsum combines such features as Rails view helper, faker test extension, and command line tool.
