Let’s be honest, we all love the idea of staying at home. Working at home? Even better—sleep an hour longer and work in your pajamas. But it’s a myth that remote work is all ponies and rainbows. Are you disciplined at home?

This is very easy test and you already know the answer. Are you able to perform your tasks at home in efficient manner? Are you taking many breaks before you are done with a task? Are you easily distracted by others, just by doing things that are taking your attention from the ‘real’ work? Be honest with yourself. Are you an expert in your domain?

When you work remotely, the only thing that matters in the short-run is your added value. In other words, your results. If you are just starting something new, the learning process can be harder, and learning from your colleagues can be difficult. If they are busy with other things, you can be left on your own, where it’s very easy to lose momentum and motivation as a remote worker.

Therefore it is better to consider remote work when you’ve already built-up your knowledge & experience. Then, the knowledge is transferred from you to others—not other way around. This way, you become a crucial asset to your team rather than a remote liability. As a matter of fact this is how we do things at Netguru. Are you a good communicator?

The biggest threat to people’s sanity for those working remotely is lack of communication. If you are completely silent for 2 working days without even dropping a line, this is usually a bad sign.

It doesn’t mean you aren’t doing the work, it’s a feeling that communication is secondary to getting work done. However, when you work remotely, communicating progress regularly is required to bring awareness that you’re doing the task. You can deliver great results consistently, but if you’re silent during the work progress, you will sooner or later be locked into ‘mole’ syndrome.

People will perceive you like someone who comes up to the surface from time to time just to take a breath and check the surroundings to quickly go back to your kingdom underground. Does your work require lots of human interaction?

Many people think that this question should be the first one to ask when you consider remote work. However, let’s face it. If you are an expert in your domain, and disciplined with good communication skills, almost anyone wants to work with you. However, there are such job positions or specific tasks that cannot be easily performed remotely. Rather pointing out specific job position names, its better to understand the character of the job. Eric Kiebler, Chief Technology Officer for Wellness 2.0 put it well here:

“In-person interactions are more likely to involve your whole set of perceptions, giving more stimulation and perhaps a richer experience to spark creativity. Most creative teams with which I have worked, and often the customer service groups that spend time on the phone, prefer in-person open space.“

Are you happy when you work remotely?

This is one of the most neglected facts about remote work. It is only meant for people who are able to enjoy it!

If you are very social person who simply cannot stay a whole day alone at home, then you will never be happy working remotely. I’ve met a lot of people who, at some point in their career, worked remotely but came back to office because they were lacking the physical contact and interaction. It’s definitely not for everyone. You have to love it.

Then, you make your work environment the best for you. You enjoy the fact that you can jump to the garden for an hour to take care of plants, or just take a nap at an opportune moment. This should be something that motivates you and activates you to do something great with the spare time & freedom you have.
